The
Asperges
This ancient devotion is a reminder of Baptism. The Congregation stands throughout.
Kneeling on lowest step before the Altar and using the Baptismal Waters blessed
at the Easter Vigil, the Celebrant sprinkles the Altar thrice and
signs himself on the forehead with the holy water. Rising, he sprinkles
his assistants, then the Choir and the Congregation.
Meanwhile the following is recited,
Vidi aquam I saw water proceeding out of the temple,
from the side thereof, alleluia: and all men, whithersoever the waters
shall come, shall be healed, and shall say, alleluia, alleluia. Psalm
118.
O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious, because
his mercy endureth forever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy
Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.
I saw water proceeding...
Having finished the sprinkling, the following is said,
Celebrant: O Lord show thy mercy upon us. Alleluia.
People: And grant us thy salvation. Alleluia.
Celebrant: O Lord hear our prayer.
People: And let our cry come unto thee.
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And with thy spirit.
Let us pray. (remain standing)
Graciously hear us, O Lord holy, Father Almighty, everlasting
God: and vouchsafe to send thy holy Angel from heaven, to guard, cherish,
protect, visit, and defend all who are assembled in this thy holy
temple; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. |
