COMING SOON--
MEET THE ALTAR GUILD
Continuing our series of articles on St. Matthew's service organizations,
you will soon be introduced to the members of the Altar Guild. Like
the Choir and Usher Team previously featured, this group serves
an essential role in the worship of our Lord.
Altar Guilds are probably as old as the Christian Church itself,
although their duties have undoubtedly become more varied and complex
as the worship of the Church developed through the centuries. Space
does not permit a detailed accounting of all these devoted ladies
do; suffice it to say that they give many hours toward keeping the
altar and the sanctuary in proper condition for the celebration
of the Mass and other services.
Presently serving on the Altar Guild are: Directress Debra Middleton,
; Brenda Angall, Sheila Bair, Ann Dearnley, Marilyn Foster, Gloria
Headrick, Cecile Henry, Carole Kleinotas, Annabelle Sitter, and
Patricia Thibodeaux. Each of these ladies will be featured in future
issues of The Messenger.
Additional members of the Altar Guild are needed. If you feel you
can serve the Church in this way, please speak to Fr. Bill.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S GROUP ACTIVITIES
Saturday, May 22, was a red-letter day in the lives of the Men's
and Women's Groups of St. Matthews.
At a ten o'clock meeting in the Parish hall, six representatives
from St. Michael's Men's Club and nine representatives of St. Anne's
Guild put their heads together to come up with a very efficient
plan for joint cooperation in various activities tentatively scheduled
for the balance of this year. In previous years, members of the
two groups got together for a simple potluck supper, and then both
sides conducted separate meetings with little or no further contact
between them. With the fantastic growth of the parish and the interest
of many new parishioners, both groups have experienced an increased
number of participants with many new ideas and enthusiasm, making
joint cooperation not only advantageous but absolutely necessary
on many of our major projects.
Tom Paganini described the new organizational structure developed
for St. Michael's Men's Club. Each major event or function, he said,
will have a Coordinator. Tom will serve as over-all Coordinator,
with Thom Brown assisting; Jim Spohn as Coordinator for Publicity;
Jim Belland, Coordinator for Special Projects; Allen Kleinotas,
Coordinator for Fund Raising; and Ed Dearnley will serve as the
Club's first treasurer.
Allen then briefed the women on the next big project on St. Michael's
Club agenda. (see Insert) Then the two groups reviewed a long list
of projects which St. Anne's Guild had adopted as their program
for 2004, and decided which of these required mutual cooperation
and planning.
Prior to concluding their joint meeting, Tom made an earnest plea
to all present. Citing the dedication and devotion of the present
active members of the two groups, he stated that they must do all
in their power to inspire more parishioners to take part in the
Men's and Women's activities. With more participation, he said,
we can do more and greater things that will benefit our parish and
hasten the day when we can worship and socialize in twice the space
we have available now.

NEW SERVICE FOR PARISHIONERS
Through St. Anne's Guild we have established a means of communication
with all members of the parish called the Telephone Tree. When there
is an event or condition of great importance to the membership,
you will receive a phone call from one of the ten Guild members
who have volunteered for this duty. That's all there is to it! If
you have any questions about this new service, don't hesitate to
call Pamela McDonough, 633-2819, or Jean Green, 657-9164
