But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost
is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of
the earth. Acts:1:8 (KJV)
During the early 1990's I worked as contact computer specialist
assigned to work for Martin Marietta. It was a good job and it gave
me the flexibility I needed as I prepared for the priesthood and
later as I was a bi-vocational priest when I was the Vicar at St.
Luke's in Port Orange, Florida. When I went to work at Martin they
assigned me to work at their "All Up Round" facility where they
did the final assembly of the Patriot missile and other ordinance.
The thing that made the biggest impression on me was the doors
and walls of the buildings not the special pass I had to get in,
the lab coat that had to be worn or the special shoes that were
issued to me that were conductive and could not be worn out side
especially when there was a thunder storm present in the area.
The reason doors and walls were so interesting is that the doors
were designed to close automatically if there was a fire or an explosion
and the walls were made to channel an explosion to the outside whether
you were trapped in the area with it or not. The buildings were
designed to limit the loss of life and the amount of damage possible
in the event of an accident. It made one realized just how powerful
the stuff you were around really was and made you think twice about
working there.
Our Lord understood the importance of energy and power. When He
ascended into heaven He did not want His disciples and those who
followed them to be powerless or alone in attempting to live the
Christian life and proclaiming the kingdom of God to the world.
To this end He promised to send them the Holy Spirit, the third
person of the Trinity, to comfort and empower them to carry out
the great commission He had given them.
The very power of the Holy Spirit, that created the heavens and
the earth and empowered the prophets of the Old Testament and the
disciples of the New Testament, is available to any believer who
calls upon God for comfort, assistance or the grace to face the
challenges of living the day-by-day life of a Christian.
One who believes in Christ never has to be alone for He is always
with them. We have a constant source of energy and power to draw
upon to endure and to overcome all of life's adventures and problems
and this energy and power is only a prayer away.
